205th Blog Post

This article is my 205th post on Just Plain Joy.

When I first started blogging, I asked a close friend, "Is it shallow to write about organizing my shoes when there are so many important issues out there?" You know, global warming, overpopulation, the demise of public education, to name a few. I had just finished my PhD yet somehow I found comfort, not in writing about the solutions to the educational demise of our nation, but in writing about how to store canned foods.

The truth is organizing my home and my environment helps me feel in control. It also helps me feel centered. The environmental devastation and economic uncertainty around us can be overwhelming. The poverty, discrimination, and social justice issues are complex - and anyone who thinks they are not complex needs to look a little closer.

Even though I have chosen to focus this blog on changing my spending habits and not on changing the world (although the two may be related at some level), I still care about those important issues. With the world raging around us, finding peace at home is that much more important.
